Brainwaves are electrical signals that travel throughout our brains instantaneously. Our brains use these electrical signals to send messages to other parts of our bodies. Our brain has 5 types of brainwaves, ranging from faster ones like beta or gamma brainwaves to slower ones like delta or theta waves. These brainwaves have direct influences over our everyday behaviors and thought patterns. If you feel like your mental health could use a boost, then it may be time to look for brainmapping near you in Denver.

Brainwave patterns correlate with specific patterns of behavior. For example, someone who is depressed might have reduced brainwave activity in the left side of the brain. On the other hand, someone who is anxious might have higher brainwave activity in the right side of the brain. When you understand your brain better with a specialized map, you’ll be able to take better control over your mental wellness.

What is Brain Mapping?

Brain mapping is the basis of an innovative brain training therapy called neurofeedback therapy. Neurofeedback , also called qEEG biofeedback, is an effective treatment for many different mental health conditions and disorders, such as ADHD, ADD, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Neurofeedback is essentially biofeedback for the brain. This therapy uses modern computer technology to regulate and stabilize the brain to improve cognition, attention, mood, anxiety, sleep, and behavior! This is accomplished without the use of medication. This therapy has also been shown to be very helpful for people who suffer from depression, anxiety, or other mental health disorders.

Brain mapping, technology allows us to pinpoint exactly which parts of the brain are out of balance and how those areas need to be retrained. Brain mapping is a non-invasive, painless, and safe method of measuring electrical activity in your brain. The qEEG feedback measures the frequency of brainwaves within different parts of the brain. This helps your clinician understand what’s going on inside the brain when you experience certain emotions, thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. The goal of this test is to help identify any abnormalities in the way the brain functions and correct any imbalances.

What Is the History of Brain Mapping?

Brain mapping was invented in the 1970’s but it wasn’t until the mid 80’s that the practice became widely used. During this time both MRI or magnetic resonance imaging and CT or computed tomography scan techniques were created. Today, there are many different ways to create brain maps including MRI scans, EEG (electroencephalography) technology, fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging), and MEG (magnetoencephalography). At Braincode Centers, we use qEEG brain mapping.

How Does Brain Mapping Work?

To create a qEEG recording of brain activity, our specialists place 16 to 25 electrodes on the scalp to monitor brainwave activity. Those electrodes collect real time data to create a brain map, which is displayed in color to indicate the relative amplitude of each frequency band. Frequency bands are visual representations of the brainwaves that are measured in hertz. Some are fast referred to as beta and gamma ranging anywhere from 12 to 100 Hz. Some are slow, those are typically delta, theta, and alpha with Hz running from 0 to 12 Hz. Hertz measures cycles per second. A red color means more activity in that frequency band. A blue color means less power in that frequency band, indicating reduced coherence between the two electrodes.

The higher the coherence level, the better the communication between the two electrodes. In general, the lower the coherence level, such as within the delta range (1–4 Hz), the worse the communication between the two electrode sites. We can help improve the coherency levels within your brain for better functionality and mental wellness.
